About Us

“If they only understood how important it is that we be heard! I can take being in a nursing home. It’s really all right, with a positive attitude. But most people here just want to tell their story. That’s what they have to give, don’t you see? And it’s a precious thing to them. You’d think people would understand what it means to us to give our lives in a story. Most of what goes on here is people listening to each other’s stories. People who work here consider that to be filling time. If they only knew.”

EMILY JOYCE (designer and editor) grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area riding a horse named Hula. After high school she gave her beloved old horse to a good home and joined a Turkish and Balkan folkdance performing group. This decision led to visiting Turkey off and on for twenty-six years. Emily Bunker

Emily is the author of three published books: Secret Rules of the SAT Game (the tricks, traps, and shortcuts of the SAT), Nuri’s Donkey (about the Turkish village she once belonged to), and Jet Black Cat (a story for children about her slightly unhinged desert cats).

She attended Stanford University, graduating with a BA in anthropology. She has worked in California as a teaching assistant for special needs children, in the United Arab Emirates as a dance teacher and choreographer, and all over Cape Cod as a math, writing, and SAT prep tutor.

TIM JOYCE (illustrator) was born in Cleveland, Ohio. Much of his childhood was spent doodling in the margins of his notebook instead of listening to the teacher.

Following his graduation from Cleveland State University, he began a career interweaving journalism and teaching with the fine arts of painting, poetry, and music. He has recorded many CDs and has Tim Joycepublished four volumes of poetry: Those Lucky Days, Flowerthief, Language Animal: New and Collected Poems, and Stone Mad.

Tim has a master’s degree in Irish literature and drama from University College Dublin. He has worked as a police reporter for The Cleveland Press, as a visiting lecturer in American literature at the John F. Kennedy School in Berlin, and in Hollywood rating movies for the Motion Picture Association of America. He is now a high school English teacher.

Emily and Tim live in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, but are seen here atop the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland. Tim is drawing one of the cliffs.
